October 2011

Words from the Commander

Alan Giampietro

Next Meeting Date: Wednesday October 26th 2011

Monthly meeting for October 2011: We will be holding our next monthly meeting on Wednesday the 26th of October 2011 at 7pm in the VFW hall with the Cooperation meeting at 5:30pm. Please make sure you put this on your social calendar. There will be a free meal for the post members in attendance after the meeting and 2 free drinks of your choice from the bar.

13 November 2011 fund raiser for our adopted Army National Guard unit: I made a mistake in the last newsletter by announcing that this fund raiser was in Oct. Please pay close attention to this correction and if possible help to sell tickets or be at the post to assist in making this a big success. Eric Goodnow is our liaison with Dog Company 1-182 Infantry of the Army National Guard that is currently deployed to Afghanistan. They are home based here in Middleborough. The unit family support group, the Oak Point Veterans’ Association, and our VFW post  will be hosting an Italian style buffet fund raiser dinner for Dog Company on Sunday November 13th from 1 - 5:pm. Donations for tickets are $12.00. There will be many door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Please call 508-967-6027 to reserve your tickets. The money raised will be used to send our adopted unit Holiday Care Packages. Remember we are still at WAR. Eric will be calling upon the post members to help out with this event. If you simply want to make a donation to the care package fund raiser please just make out a check to the VFW and on the memo line put in that the check is a donation to the care package program. Then mail the check to the VFW at 12 Station St. here in Middleborough 02346.

Successful VAVS event held: Our VAVS event of Wednesday the 19th of October 2011with the patient of the Brockton VA hospital went very well. They all enjoyed the meal of Sheppard’s Pie that Tony and his crew prepared. I want to thank all the members of the post, their family members, and the members of the auxiliary that helped out to make this a big success.

10 October 2011 District 12 meeting now in the record books: I want to thank the 15 other post members that attended the meeting with me at our post. It really showed the district that John F. Glass VFW post is alive and well. To Tony and his crew I want to say thank you for the outstanding meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, veggies, bread & butter, and dessert. Those that attend the district meetings on a regular basis always look forward to the Middleborough meeting simply because Tony does such a great job with the meal.

District 12 meetings: The schedule for the district meeting for the rest of this meeting year is as follows: November 14th 2011 Bridgewater, December 12th 2011 Abington, January 9th 2012 Whitman, February 13th 2012 Marshfield, March 12th 2012 Marion, April 9th 2012 Plymouth, May 14th 2012 Halifax, June 11th 2012 Onset. We always have good representation and henceforth a strong voice in the decision making at the district level. We meet in the driftwood Lounge at 6:30pm and car pool to the meetings. I hope to see as many of the regulars as possible back at these meetings again this year along with a bunch of new faces. Also remember that they put on a feed at the end of the meeting.

Middleborough Veterans’ Council meetings: The next meeting of the Middleborough Veterans’ Council will be on November 13th at 9:30 downstairs in the Driftwood lounge.  We have as our delegates for the next year: Eric Goodnow, Bill Oliver, and Al Ortelt. As alternates we have: Alan Giampietro, Tex Washburn, and Butch Wainwright. If you’re a delegate or alternate to the council please make every attempt possible to attend the meeting so we can be properly represented their. Decisions concerning the veterans’ organizations and their membership often times come out of the council meetings so we need to have a strong voice at them. Also veterans’ activities locally, around the area, and nationally are often discussed and planned.  If you’re not a delegate or an alternate you can still attend the meeting in a non voting capacity.
